Developing Highly Effective Teaching Practices

The Network for Educator Effectiveness (NEE) is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping educators grow, learn, and improve schools. For the last 10 years, the Effective Teaching section of our website has been dedicated to presenting teaching methods with a high impact and their impact on students’ learning. A successful model for teacher evaluation should lead to improvements in student learning and teacher performance, especially for teachers with lower performance. Surveys developed and refined over the past decade have captured students’ perceptions of their classroom experiences and provided teachers with valuable insights into improving teaching practices that lead to students’ learning experiences. 6, 9, 10, 15

With defined effectiveness, districts can use these three characteristics of effective teachers as the basis for effective professional development programs that train teachers to be effective. The establishment of rules and procedures at the beginning of the year will create an atmosphere that will promote learning. Teaching leaders also offer teachers opportunities to identify teaching and learning points and thus improve effective teaching. An effective and appropriate relationship with the students is of course also the key to a teacher’s effectiveness. Effective teachers also know students as learners, collect information from a variety of sources and create a lively and focused learning environment in which students have the opportunity to draw from a variety of texts and knowledge – such as. 3, 5, 11

Constructive feedback based on predefined criteria describing effective teaching is also essential for the continuous improvement of teaching, such as assessing the student’s performance and developing a positive attitude towards the teacher. 17

Participation in regular professional development programs is a great way to improve teaching and learning in the classroom. By understanding what great teachers do and improving the way teachers get insight into their practice, it helps more teachers develop their practice and achieve success for their students. Professional development, which begins with a new teacher introductory program, is one of the most successful strategies school districts have to increase the effectiveness of their teachers and principals. Schools and districts that can support and retain effective teachers have a sustainable teacher development program. 1, 6, 10

Teaching strategies are the methods and techniques that teachers use to support their students through the learning process. Teachers choose subjects they want to study, and teaching strategies that are applicable to effective teaching methods are key to learning for students. Last but not least, it is of central importance for good teaching practice to impart learning strategies to all age groups. If teaching practices by teachers and principals are a priority because they are an important factor in improving pupils’ performance, then we have a solid basis for continuing the professional development process in the classroom. 8, 10, 14

Being an effective teacher requires the implementation of creative and innovative teaching strategies to meet the individual needs of each student. The Considerations Package focuses on practical homework as a teaching strategy that teachers use to increase and maintain the storage of information for learners. While the same approach can be applied to all students based on the will and abilities of the teacher, IL trains teachers to develop goals and provide them with appropriate support based on the needs of the teacher, and the students “metacognitive strategies are developed to help students become more aware of their own learning and how to make it more effective. 1, 5, 13, 16

Active learning requires teachers to design and try out teaching strategies and offers teachers the opportunity to engage with their students and their design. An important part of effective teaching is the ability to calculate performance rates based on the pupil’s teaching scores. Teaching practice can be improved through mentoring, coaching, and team learning, which focus on clearly defined results. 2, 12, 17

The education community needs a better understanding of teacher effectiveness in order to create more effective teaching methods and better teacher training. Effective teaching requires the ability to improve and evaluate effective practices. 7, 17

While individual teachers can participate in professional learning that is consistent with their professional goals, the universal effectiveness of teaching depends on prioritizing teaching in every school and school system, creating a culture and system that supports teaching, and teachers developing leaders who are adept at facilitating collaborative learning. Investing in learning professionals is crucial to ensure that schools become learning communities where teachers work together, learn from each other and share best practices for effective teaching and learning. 4, 17
