Making Distant Learning Easier for Students

As schools shift to virtual teaching to keep students and families safe, it is more important than ever to adopt special education resources for distance learning. Class teachers are being asked to improve their professional skills to counteract this, according to a new report from the American Academy of Special Education. 3, 15 

This new way of learning requires resources, as special education teachers have to spend more time documenting, formalities, and creating materials for students while having all the information they need to learn and connect with parents and mentors who can support their students. The learning curve can be steep, so adapting to new distance learning programs is a challenge for many students and teachers. When many students enroll in a course, it is easier for them to fall behind, according to the report. 3, 6 

It is easy for students to feel disconnected and not take learning at home seriously, and they get frustrated because they have a hard time understanding what to do. Teachers may find that students who do not want to participate in class discussions in person are more likely to participate online.
