This bibliography lists articles that encourage teachers to become more aware of their own diversity and inclusion issues in their classrooms to improve teacher-student interaction in classrooms. Learn to learn, including the things you can do to implement inclusion principles immediately, such as setting up your classroom, creating effective learning groups, and adapting your curriculum. Ron Billingsley from English offers a discussion course to teach 15-20 students the importance of creating a diversity-inclusive atmosphere within the classroom. 1, 2, 9 

These strategies will foster students’ cultural awareness and strengthen their sense of identity. Creating an inclusive culture that promotes inclusive teaching and learning will benefit not only educators but also students. 5, 14 

Teachers who want to be at the forefront of their profession should understand how to create an inclusive environment in the classroom. In trying to create a safe and inclusive classroom, teachers should consider several factors, including their own classroom behavior and student needs. 9, 10 

Below are some examples of measures teachers can take to address issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion in their courses. The next step in improving a course is to review what is being done on these issues and focus on how the course climate and applied pedagogy address these issues or not. See ATTACHMENT B for more information on how to address issues such as diversity/inclusion and equity for the benefit of students. 12 

An effective way for teachers to do this is to impart to their students the personal and professional values of diversity and inclusion. Cal Poly is part of a tradition of including clear statements on teaching philosophy in curricula. These statements and language are useful whenever teachers recognize the need to reaffirm the importance of justice, diversity, inclusion, and justice in their courses. In addition, the authors draw on the research literature to support the commitment to diversity and to explain further how diversity can be used in the classroom, using examples from other universities such as the University of California, San Francisco. 8, 11, 12 

If you know your students and understand their strengths and weaknesses, you are all better equipped to promote diversity and work as teachers to address the challenges and opportunities that come with a focus on diversity in the classroom. Embedded curriculum content, such as the involvement of different students, faculty, and staff, also contributes to an inclusive learning environment in which all students feel valued equally. 0, 7 

If you ignore the issue of diversity in the classroom and decide not to promote diversity in your school, you are not doing your job. This post is for those of you who want to tackle this in your schools and for all teachers. 0

The classroom is important for promoting cultural awareness, but you should also make sure that diversity is represented in your actual curriculum. There are several ways you can incorporate cultural awareness and diversity into your curriculum. The lesson plans vary depending on the culture you represent in the classroom, the course you teach and the subject matter. These topics include learning about race and racism through storytelling, as well as issues such as gender, sexuality, gender identity and gender expression. 5, 6, 13

It is recognized that creating a workplace culture of diversity and inclusion is an ongoing process of development for individuals and organizations. A daily diversity development plan is a great way to prioritize and normalize equity, inclusion, and educational environments. 4, 14 

This allows educators to create afternoon care that takes place outside the regular curriculum. Online posting forums are an effective way to enable teachers to share how they practice equity and inclusion in the classroom. A daily email that explores diversity and inclusion is another effective way to provide teachers with a continuous career path. In the winter of 2016 / 2017, the Urban Planning Department used funding from the Center for Teaching Excellence to consolidate and expand existing resources to create a self-evaluating teaching tool for the department in terms of diversity, equity, and inclusion. As a pilot test tool, teachers and urban planning students will read the curriculum of the program’s core courses to assess how each department is currently dealing with diversity and equity/inclusion issues and how they can address them. Through this pilot project in our department, we have been able to determine whether justice, diversity, or inclusion are being taken into account and whether most of our curricula are achieving this. 12
